Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of western Crete, is one of the longest gorges in Europe at approximately 16 kilometres. It runs through the Samaria National Park and is a protected natural monument. The trail begins at Xyloskalo near Omalos and descends to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where visitors board a ferry to Chora Sfakion or Paleochora. The gorge is open to hikers typically from May through October, depending on water levels and seasonal conditions. The walk takes between 4 and 7 hours depending on pace. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and start early to avoid midday heat. The gorge passes through dramatic cliff walls, including the famous Iron Gates section where the rock faces narrow to just a few metres apart. Entry fees apply at the northern gate.
