Greece's Digital Payment Boom: Cash Fades Across Crete

Greece is now one of the fastest-growing digital payments markets in the European Union, and the shift is clearly visible across Crete. Contactless card payments and mobile wallets are increasingly accepted at tavernas, shops, hotels, and tourist sites, while cash use continues to decline. Visitors should still carry some euros in cash, as smaller villages, local markets, and some traditional kafeneions may not yet have card terminals. However, in larger towns such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos, paying by card or phone is now the norm. Most ATMs remain widely available throughout the island. This trend toward cashless transactions aligns with broader EU payment policy and makes day-to-day spending more convenient for international tourists accustomed to digital payments at home.
