Back to newsOn May 20, 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Mercury, a large-scale airborne assault on Crete. It was the first major airborne invasion in military history, involving thousands of paratroopers dropping across the island, primarily targeting Maleme airfield near Chania, Heraklion, and Rethymno. Allied forces, including Greek, British, Australian, and New Zealand troops, along with Cretan civilians, mounted fierce resistance. After twelve days of intense fighting, Germany secured the island on June 1, 1941. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. Today, visitors can explore this history at the Battle of Crete Museum in Chania, the German War Cemetery at Maleme, and the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda. Each year on May 20, memorial ceremonies take place across Crete, with the main commemorations held in Chania. Attendance is open to the public.
