Back to newsLocal organizations in Heraklion have written to the Greek Ministry of Culture requesting that scheduled restoration works on the Morosini Fountain, the iconic 17th-century landmark in Lions Square, be postponed until November, after the main tourist season ends. The groups argue that starting construction during peak summer months would significantly disrupt one of the city's most visited sites. They were informed the works are publicly funded, and are pushing for a start date that avoids the busiest period for visitors. If the request is approved, tourists visiting Heraklion this summer should be able to see the fountain without construction barriers. The Morosini Fountain, built by Venetian ruler Francesco Morosini in 1628, sits at the heart of the old town and is a focal point for visitors exploring the historic center.
