Heraklion to Restore Historic Morosini Fountain in Lions Square

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Tourism and Entrepreneurship Committee of the Municipality of Heraklion convened with representatives from all of the city's tourism organizations. The central topic was the planned restoration of the Morosini Fountain, one of Heraklion's most recognizable landmarks, located in Lions Square in the heart of the city. The maintenance work is set to be carried out jointly by the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO). No timeline for the works has been officially announced. Tourists visiting Heraklion should be aware that the fountain and surrounding area in Lions Square may be subject to partial access restrictions once restoration begins. The Morosini Fountain, built in 1628 during Venetian rule, remains a popular meeting point and photo stop in central Heraklion.
