Digital Services Alone Won't Save Crete's Rural Villages

Sunday, 21 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A participatory workshop held at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH) brought together researchers and regional stakeholders to discuss the challenges facing rural and remote communities across Crete. A key finding from the session was that improving digital services and expanding internet connectivity, while helpful, is not sufficient on its own to retain populations in these areas. The workshop explored broader strategies needed to keep villages alive and economically active. For visitors, this conversation is relevant context: many of Crete's most scenic inland villages face depopulation pressures, which can affect local services and amenities. Travelers venturing into the mountainous interior or eastern rural zones should plan ahead, as some villages have limited shops, fuel stations, or accommodation options. Supporting local businesses when passing through these communities makes a direct difference.
