EU-Funded Project Boosts Griffon Vulture Protection in Crete

Conservationists from the Northern Pindos National Park Management Unit have traveled to Crete to take part in field activities under the LIFE Balkan GriffON project, a European Union-funded initiative dedicated to protecting Griffon Vultures across Greece and the Balkans. The program focuses on monitoring vulture populations, addressing threats such as poisoned bait and power line collisions, and supporting the birds' long-term survival in the region. Crete is home to one of the most significant Griffon Vulture colonies in the Mediterranean, particularly in the mountainous interior and gorges of the island. Visitors hiking routes such as the Samaria Gorge or exploring the White Mountains may have the chance to spot these large raptors soaring overhead. Disturbing nesting sites or leaving out bait is illegal and harmful to the species.
