The decline is linked to frequent closures, which occur due to weather conditions, trail safety issues, and maintenance needs. The 16-kilometer trail, running from the Omalos plateau to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, typically operates from May through October. Tourists planning to hike Samaria are advised to check official opening status before traveling, as closures can happen with little advance notice. Sturdy footwear, water, and early departure are recommended. The situation is prompting local authorities to reassess how the gorge is managed going forward.
