A severe and unprecedented heatwave is sweeping across Europe, with the World Health Organization recording over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21. The extreme heat is affecting multiple countries and poses serious health risks, particularly for elderly travelers and those with underlying conditions. For tourists currently in Crete or planning to visit, authorities recommend avoiding outdoor activities between 11:00 and 17:00, staying hydrated with at least two liters of water per day, and seeking air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and apply high-SPF sunscreen regularly. If you or someone nearby shows signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or confusion, move to a cool area immediately and seek medical assistance. The European emergency number 112 is available throughout Greece.
