Crete's Kontomari Festival Honors 1941 WWII Massacre Through Art

Saturday, 27 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
The 4th Kontomari Festival "Days of Memory" took place in the village of Kontomari, near Chania in western Crete. The festival features a program called "Common Ground - Small Stages," bringing together artists and local communities in an intimate, participatory setting. Kontomari holds deep historical significance: in June 1941, German forces carried out the first mass execution of civilians in occupied Western Europe here, killing all the village's adult men. The festival uses theatre, performance, and collective memory to honour that history. For visitors, it offers a rare chance to engage with Cretan cultural and wartime heritage beyond the usual tourist circuit. Kontomari is a short drive from Chania city. Check local cultural boards or the municipality of Platanias for upcoming editions and event schedules.
