Krasi Community Rallies for Traditional Whitewashing

Wednesday, 24 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Residents of Krasi, a small traditional village in the Heraklion regional unit of Crete, have gathered for a community whitewashing event at the village fountains, known locally as "vryses." Whitewashing is a longstanding Mediterranean tradition where locals paint stone walls, curbs, and public structures with lime, typically as a seasonal act of collective upkeep and village pride. Krasi is already a popular stop for visitors, home to one of the oldest plane trees in Europe, estimated to be over 2,000 years old, and its picturesque stone fountains. The communal effort reflects the village's commitment to maintaining its authentic character. Tourists passing through can enjoy the refreshing spring water from the fountains, explore the historic tree at the village center, and experience a working example of traditional Cretan community life.
