Back to newsGreece has extended the deadline to August 20, 2026 for investors to submit expressions of interest in a major concession covering 22 regional airports, including Sitia Airport in eastern Crete. Several large investment groups are competing for the 40-year operating contract.
Sitia Airport currently serves seasonal domestic routes and limited international connections to eastern Crete. If awarded to a private operator, the concession could bring upgrades to terminal facilities, expanded route networks, and improved passenger services over the coming years.
For tourists, this is a long-term development rather than an immediate change. Flights to and from Sitia will continue to operate normally through this process. Travelers planning to explore the less-visited eastern part of the island, including the Minoan site of Zakros or the palm beach at Vai, can still fly into Sitia or use Heraklion as an alternative hub.
