Back to newsA Greek MP has formally raised in Parliament the question of completing the Karterou-Kastelli road, an alternative route connecting Heraklion to the new Kastelli International Airport through inland villages. The proposal, which has been discussed publicly for some time, would offer travelers a scenic route bypassing the main highway. Kastelli Airport, located east of Heraklion, is expected to open around 2028 and will serve as Crete's main international gateway with capacity for up to 18 million passengers per year. If approved and built, this secondary road could benefit tourists renting cars or staying in villages along the eastern route, providing an alternative to the main BOAK highway. No construction timeline has been confirmed yet. Visitors planning trips around the new airport should monitor updates as the project develops.
