Back to newsKnossos remains the most visited archaeological site in Crete and the island's strongest tourism brand. The Minoan palace complex, located just 5 kilometers south of Heraklion, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year from the approximately 6.5 million tourists who come to Crete annually. Dating back over 3,500 years, Knossos is considered the center of the ancient Minoan civilization, one of Europe's earliest. Visitors can explore reconstructed frescoes, royal chambers, and the legendary labyrinth associated with the myth of the Minotaur. The site is open year-round, with peak crowds in July and August. Arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended to avoid heat and queues. Guided tours are available on-site and can significantly enhance the experience given the complexity of the ruins.
