Greece Expands Protected Beaches to Safeguard Nesting Sea Turtles

Wednesday, 13 May 2026/Google News/1
Greece has expanded its list of officially protected beaches, adding more coastal areas where sun loungers, parasols, and amplified music are prohibited. The measure applies to beaches designated as environmentally sensitive, typically those hosting protected wildlife such as sea turtle nesting sites or rare coastal vegetation. Crete, home to several Caretta caretta loggerhead turtle nesting beaches along its southern and northern coasts, is among the regions affected. Tourists visiting these beaches should expect no rental equipment and no beach bars playing music. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own towels and umbrellas where permitted, check local signage before setting up, and avoid disturbing marked nesting zones, particularly between May and October when turtles are active. Fines apply for violations. Local municipal websites and the Greek National Tourism Organisation list which beaches fall under protection.
