Heraklion Celebrates 60 Years Since Saint Titus Relic Returned from Venice

Sunday, 17 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Heraklion marked the 60th anniversary of the return of the Holy Skull of Saint Titus with a large public procession through the city. Saint Titus, a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Crete, is the patron saint of the island. His sacred relic was held in Venice for centuries during the Venetian occupation and returned to Heraklion in 1966, where it is now enshrined at the Church of Saint Titus in the city center. The anniversary procession drew large crowds of local residents and clergy. Tourists in Heraklion can visit the Church of Saint Titus, located near the old port and the main market street (1866 Street), to view the relic and learn about this important chapter of Cretan religious and cultural history. The church is open to visitors throughout the year.
