Back to newsCretan authorities are deploying satellite technology to help combat dangerous mosquito populations across the island. The initiative uses remote sensing data to identify and monitor mosquito breeding grounds, enabling more targeted and timely interventions by pest control teams. The mosquitoes of concern include species capable of transmitting diseases such as West Nile virus, which has been detected in Greece in recent years. For visitors, the practical advice remains standard: use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk, and ensure accommodations have window screens or air conditioning. Coastal wetland areas and standing water near agricultural zones tend to have higher mosquito activity. The satellite-assisted program aims to reduce spraying costs while improving coverage, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach parts of the island.
