Back to newsGreece's Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Ioannis Plakiotakis, traveled to London to attend commemorations marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The battle took place in May 1941, when Allied and Cretan forces resisted a large-scale German airborne invasion for ten days before the island fell. It remains one of the most significant events in Cretan history and a source of deep local pride. Visitors to Crete can explore this history at the Battle of Crete and National Resistance Museum in Heraklion, as well as at war cemeteries in Souda Bay, near Chania, which holds the graves of Commonwealth soldiers and is open to the public year-round.
