The municipality of Apokoronas, in the Chania regional unit of northwestern Crete, has issued a public notice marking the start of the annual fire prevention period. Local authorities are calling on residents and visitors to take protective measures to reduce the risk of wildfires across the area.
Tourists staying in or traveling through Apokoronas, which includes popular villages and coastal areas around Souda Bay and the Akrotiri peninsula, should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or disposing of cigarettes outdoors, particularly near dry vegetation. Open burning of any kind is prohibited during this period under Greek law.
Visitors hiking or exploring rural and forested areas are advised to stay on marked paths and avoid bringing flammable materials. In case of a fire sighting, contact the European emergency number 112 or the Greek fire service directly at 199.
