The Crete Aquarium (CretAquarium), located in Gournes on the northern coast near Heraklion, received a visit from Stavros Kalafatis, Greece's Deputy Minister of Development, on May 18, 2026. The visit highlights continued government interest in supporting one of Crete's most popular family attractions, which showcases Mediterranean marine life including sharks, rays, and octopuses across dozens of themed tanks. The aquarium is operated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and is open to visitors year-round. It sits roughly 15 kilometers east of Heraklion city center, making it an easy half-day trip from most northern Crete resorts. Entrance fees apply, with discounts available for children and students. The facility includes a gift shop and cafe. No changes to opening hours or visitor access were announced following the minister's visit.
