Back to newsPrincess Anne visited Maleme, in the Platanias municipality west of Chania, to attend a memorial ceremony at the RAF monument honoring soldiers who fell during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. The Princess met with Platanias Mayor Yannis Malandrakis during her visit. The Maleme War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is one of the most significant World War II sites on the island and is open to visitors year-round free of charge. It holds the graves of over 1,500 Allied servicemen. The site is located approximately 17 km west of Chania city center, easily accessible by car or local bus along the northern coastal road. Visitors interested in Crete's wartime history can also explore the nearby Battle of Crete Museum in Platanias village.
