Spinalonga Fortress Launches Digital QR-Code Guided Tours

Friday, 1 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Spinalonga, the iconic Venetian fortress and former leper colony on the northeastern coast of Crete near Elounda, is set to offer visitors a new digital experience through a QR-code guided tour system. The project, overseen by the local archaeological authority in the Lasithi regional unit, introduces an electronic guide accessible via smartphone, allowing visitors to explore the site with detailed multimedia content at their own pace. The initiative aims to upgrade visitor services at one of Crete's most visited historical monuments, which draws hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. Visitors can access the digital guide by scanning QR codes posted at key points throughout the island. Spinalonga is reachable by short boat trips from Elounda and Plaka, with ferries running regularly during the tourist season.
