Fake Interpol Officers Target Crete in Phone Scam Spreading Across Greece

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Authorities in Crete are warning residents and visitors about a phone scam involving criminals posing as Interpol officers. In a recent case, a 58-year-old woman lost 800 euros after receiving an international call from someone claiming to be a police officer investigating a serious crime linked to her identity. The fraudsters use official-sounding language and fake badge numbers to pressure victims into transferring money or handing over cash. This tactic is spreading across Greece and represents a shift in scam methods, with callers now using international phone numbers to appear more credible. Tourists should know that real Interpol or police officers never call to demand money over the phone. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and report it to local police (dial 100 in Greece).
