Greece Braces for Dangerous Wildfire Season as Heat and Drought Soar

Saturday, 16 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Researchers and fire safety experts are warning that the summer of 2026 is expected to be an especially difficult year for wildfires across Greece, including Crete. Elevated temperatures, prolonged drought conditions, and strong seasonal winds are contributing to an unusually high fire risk this season. Tourists visiting Crete this summer should take precautions when exploring rural and forested areas, particularly in the interior and hillside regions of the island. Avoid lighting fires or barbecues outside designated areas, and never discard cigarettes in dry vegetation. During periods of strong winds, some hiking trails and nature reserves may be temporarily closed by local authorities. If you see smoke or flames, call the Greek emergency number 112 immediately. Stay informed through local news sources and hotel staff, and follow all instructions from authorities regarding evacuation or access restrictions.
