Back to newsThe Municipality of Heraklion has launched a new mixed waste collection system, combining the city's existing municipal cleaning service with an external contractor to expand capacity and coverage. The initiative aims to improve street cleanliness across the city, particularly in high-traffic areas. As part of the rollout, Heraklion is also extending its appointment-based recycling program, starting with the 1st Municipal Community, which covers the historic city center. Residents and visitors can schedule collection of bulky or recyclable items through the municipality. For tourists staying in or near central Heraklion, the changes should result in cleaner streets and more visible recycling infrastructure. The program is expected to roll out progressively to other municipal communities. No disruption to normal street access or tourism services is anticipated during the transition.
