Magnitude 5.5 Quake Hits Crete; No Panic as Aftershocks Forecast

Friday, 24 April 2026/CretaOne/1
A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck south of Crete on the morning of April 24, 2026. Seismologist Akis Tselentis stated that no panic is necessary, and that the seismic activity is expected to taper off with a series of smaller aftershocks over the following 24 hours. This type of aftershock sequence is common following a mainshock of this size in the region. Tourists currently on the island should be aware that minor tremors may be felt throughout the day and into April 25. No significant damage or tsunami warning has been reported. If you feel a tremor, stay calm, move away from windows, and follow guidance from local authorities or hotel staff. Normal tourist activities across the island are not expected to be disrupted.
