Back to newsHeraklion held a solemn religious procession through the city center to mark the 60th anniversary of the return of the Sacred Skull of Saint Titus, one of the most venerated relics in Crete. Saint Titus was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Crete, making this relic of significant spiritual and historical importance to the island. Large crowds of worshippers lined the streets to follow the procession. The relic is normally housed at the Saint Titus Church in central Heraklion, a short walk from the main market street (1866 Street) and Lions Square. Tourists visiting Heraklion can view the church and its relic year-round. During major religious celebrations, expect temporary road closures and increased foot traffic around the city center.
