Greece's April 2026 review of protected coastlines raised the national total to 251 designated pristine beaches, with Crete accounting for 25 of them. The Chania regional unit holds the highest concentration on the island. These beaches are classified as undeveloped natural shores, meaning visitors will find no sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, or permanent structures. Commercial activity and vehicle access are prohibited. The designation aims to preserve biodiversity and coastal ecosystems. Tourists planning beach trips in Crete should check in advance whether their destination falls under this classification, as amenities typically expected at organized beaches will not be available. Bringing your own supplies, including water, shade, and snacks, is strongly recommended when visiting these protected stretches.
