New traffic regulations have been introduced on the BOAK highway between Skaleta and Latzima, following significant congestion caused by ongoing construction works. Drivers on this stretch will now encounter STOP signs and audio warning systems at a particularly hazardous section of the road.
The changes are part of an official decision aimed at improving safety and managing traffic flow through the active construction zone. The BOAK is Crete's main east-west highway, currently being expanded and modernized, with completion of the full route expected around 2028.
Tourists driving along the northern coast between Heraklion and Rethymno should expect delays and exercise caution in this area. Allow extra travel time, follow all signage carefully, and be prepared to stop at designated points. Road conditions in active construction zones can change with little notice.
