Back to newsOn Thursday, July 2, the Chania Fire Service responded quickly to a dry grass fire in the Chania region of western Crete. Firefighters mobilized immediately and brought the blaze under control. The operation concluded with no reported injuries and no damage to property.
Dry vegetation fires are common in Crete during summer due to high temperatures and low humidity. While this incident was resolved without incident, tourists visiting the island should be aware that outdoor fire risk is elevated during July and August. Avoid discarding cigarettes outdoors, do not light campfires or barbecues outside designated areas, and follow any local authority instructions if smoke is visible in the area. If you notice a fire, call the Greek emergency number 199 (Fire Service) immediately.
