The Villa Ariadne was built in 1906 to reside archaeologist Arthur Evans and during the Second World War housed the German commander of Crete. Here was signed the delivery of Crete to the Allies.

Around the historic monument there is a beautiful garden, the unique Edwardian garden in Greece (with naturalistic planting inside a strongly structured framework), which has been studied by architects and agronomists. The Stratigraphic Museum is located adjacent to the historic Villa and houses the British Archaeological School.

There are stored all the little sherds of excavations of Knossos used for dating the findings. The museum accepts Archeology students from Greece and Britain.
