Stavromenos beach lies just about 1 kilometer east of Sfakaki beach and forms a natural continuation of the long coastline of Rethymno Bay. Known for its wide sandy shore and clear waters, the beach is nevertheless exposed to northern winds, which often bring waves.
Along the coastline, visitors will find both organized sections with sunbeds, umbrellas, and spots for coffee or food, as well as quieter corners for more relaxation. The environmental value of the area is noteworthy.
As with all the beaches along Rethymno Bay, from May to September loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta ) choose Stavromenos as a nesting site. In certain parts of the beach, you will notice discreet markings that protect their nests.
Stavromenos has been inhabited since antiquity. In the wider area, remains of Minoan settlements and Roman bath complexes have come to light, highlighting its long and continuous history.
