The Venetian gate of Dermatas is located approximately in the middle of the coastal walls of Candia (current Heraklion ), at the site of the Bodossakion School and connected the walled city with the sea. It was actually used as a backup gate, in case the mouth of the main port was blocked At this point, in November 1668, the French soldiers of De La Feuillades arrived to reinforce the Venetian army, but they were cannoned by the Turks who had settled at the mouth of the river Giofiros .

This was a major breakthrough in accelerating the fall of the city later and the complete consolidation of the Ottomans on the island. Much of the gate was destroyed to build Skordilis Street and the seaside road of Heraklion.

You can still see a large part of it below the current road and the beach of Dermatas.
