Church of Agia Marina at Moulefe

The church of Agia Marina in the green area of Moulefe belongs to the administrative boundaries of Panagia village of Pediada province. This was formerly a strategic point, as the roads to the Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite in Symi , the Ancient Erganos and the Diktaean Cave crossed here in the Minoan times.

In later times, the paved road, known as Peratostrata , continued to connect the villages of Viannos , Kastelli and Arkalochori . In fact, there are still buildings from the old inn, where travelers and animals resided and cooled down from the nearby spring.

The church of Agia Marina is small and single-naved with its interior frescoed from the beginning of the 14th century. The pictorial decoration is partially preserved and is a typical folk art of its period.

The frescoes include scenes from the life of Christ, St. Marina, and individual saints, among whom stands out Agia Marina with an embossed halo.

Interesting is the depiction of St. George in a seascape, found also in the church of Saint George Sfakiotis in Davaide .

This suggests that these two temples were painted by the same person.
