June 17 brings a dry, warm day across Crete. No precipitation is recorded anywhere on the island, temperatures peak between 26.5°C in Rethymno and 28.9°C in Elounda, and winds remain light throughout. The only note of caution this morning is a fog patch over Heraklion, which should lift within a couple of hours as the sun strengthens.
North Coast and South Coast
Along the northern arc, Chania (27°C) and Rethymno (26.5°C) start the day under mainly clear to clear skies. Heraklion wakes in fog but will likely clear to sunshine by mid-morning, with a high of 28.2°C. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia both sit at 27-28°C under mainly clear conditions throughout the day.
The south coast is the warmest and most settled part of the island today. Ierapetra records the highest overnight minimum at 22.1°C, meaning temperatures never really drop after dark. Makrigialos peaks at 28.5°C under clear skies, and Elounda on the northeast gulf reaches the day's island high of 28.9°C. Eastern and southern locations see clear to partly cloudy conditions from morning onward.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Ida above Rethymno will be clear of cloud today. Hikers heading into the Samaria Gorge should start at first light; canyon floor temperatures climb quickly after 09:00. Carry at least two litres of water per person and pack sunscreen for the exposed sections near Agia Roumeli.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Winds are light across the island, peaking at 15.8 km/h in Heraklion and dropping to 10.7 km/h at Makrigialos. The sea is calm to very calm: wave heights range from just 0.18 m at Rethymno to 0.52 m off Chania, well within comfortable limits for snorkelling and kayaking. Sea surface temperatures are inviting, ranging from 23.5°C at Sitia to 24.7°C at Heraklion and Rethymno.
UV index peaks between 8.3 and 8.55 at all locations, placing it firmly in the very high band. Meaningful exposure builds from around 10:00 and remains intense until 17:00.
Swim Verdict
Excellent. Flat swell, calm water, and sea temperatures around 24°C make this one of the better beach days of the early season. All coastal areas are suitable for families and recreational swimmers. The Libyan Sea beaches around Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the most sheltered conditions, with wave heights at or below 0.42 m.
Practical Tip for the Day
Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation this morning, not just when you reach the beach. Reapply after every swim. A wide-brim hat and a light cover-up during the hours between noon and 16:00 will guard against the very high UV and help you avoid the kind of burn that cuts a trip short.
