Back to newsSeveral taxi drivers in Crete have been arrested after being caught charging tourists double the standard fare. Authorities intervened following complaints from visitors who were overcharged for rides, likely around the island's popular tourist areas and airports. Greek taxi services operate on a metered tariff system, and charging above the official rate is illegal.
Tourists should be aware that taxis in Crete use two tariff rates: Tariff 1 applies within city limits, and Tariff 2 applies outside city limits or between midnight and 5am. Drivers are required to show the meter and cannot charge a flat rate above the regulated price. If you are overcharged, note the taxi number, ask for a receipt, and report it to the local tourist police (dial 171). Always confirm the fare before or at the start of your journey.
