Back to newsCrete is entering its first heat wave of the season, with temperatures expected to reach 30°C or above in the coming days. Meteorologist Ziakopoulou attributes the spike to a mass of warm air moving in from central and western Europe, pushing thermometers well above seasonal norms. Sunshine will be widespread across the island.
For visitors, this means beach days will feel genuinely hot rather than just warm. Stay hydrated throughout the day, apply high-SPF sunscreen and reapply after swimming, and plan strenuous outdoor activities such as gorge hikes or archaeological site visits for early morning, before 10:00, or late afternoon, after 17:00. Midday heat in direct sun can be intense, particularly inland and in lower-altitude areas. Light, breathable clothing and a hat are strongly recommended. Coastal breezes may offer some relief along northern and eastern shores.
