Crete Raises Health Alert Over Major Cockroach Infestation in Heraklion

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Regional authorities in Crete have raised a public health alert over a cockroach infestation in Heraklion, the island's largest city. Antonis Papadakis, a regional official, has formally called on the Heraklion Municipality to take immediate action, while clarifying which authority is responsible for pest control spraying operations in different areas of the city. Papadakis also outlined the conditions under which the Regional Authority can step in directly if the municipality does not act. Tourists visiting Heraklion, particularly those dining out or staying in the city center, should be aware of the situation. Choosing establishments with visible hygiene certifications and checking recent reviews is advisable. The issue is under active review by local government, and coordinated spraying operations are expected to follow as responsibilities between the municipality and region are resolved.
