Greece steps up wildfire prevention with 134 fire safety arrests

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Greek fire authorities have recorded 134 arrests for violations of fire safety legislation between January 1 and June 28, 2026. The arrests cover offenses related to fire prevention laws across the country, including Crete, as the summer season brings heightened wildfire risk across the island. Tourists visiting Crete should be aware that fire safety rules are actively enforced. Open burning, discarding cigarettes in dry vegetation, and lighting fires in unauthorized areas are illegal and can result in immediate arrest. During summer months, fire danger levels on the island frequently reach high or extreme ratings, and local authorities take violations seriously. Visitors hiking, camping, or renting vehicles are advised to check daily fire danger maps, avoid any open flames in natural areas, and follow instructions from local authorities if a fire breaks out nearby.
