Back to newsElafonisi is a small island-beach on the southwestern tip of Crete, connected to the mainland by a shallow lagoon you can wade across. It is internationally recognized for its distinctive pink sand, which gets its color from crushed shells and coral fragments. The beach regularly appears on lists of Europe's best beaches and draws visitors from across the world each summer.
The site sits within a protected nature reserve, so facilities are limited and access rules apply. Visitors should arrive early in the day during July and August, as the beach becomes very crowded by midmorning. Parking is available near the entrance but fills quickly. The drive from Chania takes approximately 90 minutes via the southern coastal road. Bring water, sun protection, and cash, as services on-site are minimal. Snorkeling in the lagoon area is popular given the clear, shallow water.
