Rockfalls Close Parts of Samaria Gorge Trail in Crete

Friday, 19 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Rockfalls have been reported at two points along the Samaria Gorge trail, Kefalovrisia and Portes, according to OФYПЕКА (the Greek Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization). The falls are caused by strong winds currently affecting the area. Visitors planning to hike the gorge, one of Europe's longest and a top attraction in western Crete, should check official trail status before setting out. The gorge entrance is near Xyloskalo in the White Mountains, south of Chania. During periods of rockfall risk or strong winds, authorities may restrict or close access for safety. Always confirm the trail is open on the day of your visit by contacting the Samaria Gorge management office or checking posted notices at the trailhead.
