samedi 27 juin 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min de lecture
Eleftherna, an ancient archaeological site in central Crete near Rethymno, is marking 10 years of cultural programming and ongoing excavations. Archaeologist Nikos Stampolidis, who has led the site's research for decades, describes Eleftherna as "the lamp that illuminates Crete," highlighting its significance as one of the most important Bronze Age and Geometric period sites on the island. The anniversary celebrations include cultural events tied to the site and its museum, the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, located in the village of Eleftherna about 30 kilometers southeast of Rethymno. Visitors can explore the museum's collection of finds spanning from the 10th to the 3rd century BC. The site is accessible by car and makes a rewarding half-day trip from Rethymno or central Crete for those interested in ancient Greek history and archaeology.
