Routes in Musical Tradition: Exploring Cretan Folk Heritage

samedi 9 mai 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min de lecture
A new weekly column titled "Routes in Musical Tradition" has launched in the cultural supplement of Haniotika Nea, a newspaper based in Chania, western Crete. The column, contributed by writer and researcher Kostas Kourkounakis, explores the rich musical heritage of Crete, tracing the history, instruments, and regional styles that shape the island's distinctive folk tradition. Cretan music, centered on the lyra and laouto, remains a living part of local culture and can be experienced at festivals, tavernas, and village celebrations throughout the island. Visitors interested in authentic Cretan culture can follow the column for deeper context before attending live performances. Traditional music events are regularly held in Chania's old town, particularly around the Venetian harbor area, especially during summer months.
