On Friday, April 17, the Municipality of Platanias held the traditional "kotinos" cutting ceremony at the monumental olive tree of Vouves, marking preparations for the 10th Crete Marathon in Chania. The kotinos, a wreath woven from wild olive branches, is a symbol rooted in ancient Greek athletic tradition and was awarded to Olympic winners in antiquity. The Vouves olive tree, located near Kissamos in western Crete, is estimated to be over 3,000 years old and is one of the oldest living olive trees in the world. Tourists visiting the area can see the tree at the Olive Tree Museum in Vouves village, open year-round. The Crete Marathon takes place in the Chania region and welcomes international participants each year.
