Witness Loggerhead Turtles on Crete: Nighttime Conservation Walks

ARCHELON, Greece's sea turtle protection society, runs the "Sea Turtle Beach Walk" program on Crete, offering guided nighttime walks along loggerhead sea turtle (caretta-caretta) nesting beaches. The program operates during nesting season, roughly May through October, at key sites including Rethymno and the Messara Bay coastline. Participants walk with trained volunteers to observe nesting activity or hatchlings without disturbing them, learning about conservation efforts along the way. Spots are limited and must be booked in advance through ARCHELON directly. Visitors are asked to follow strict guidelines: no flash photography, no touching turtles or nests, and staying within designated areas. This experience draws participants from across Europe and beyond.
