Island Overview
Autumn is making its presence felt across Crete today. The island divides clearly into two weather zones: a wet, overcast north coast where showers are moving through the morning, and a dry but breezy south where gusts are approaching near-gale strength by the afternoon.
North Coast: Showers and Mild Temperatures
Heraklion, Rethymno, Hersonissos and Malia are all reporting light rain showers with precipitation totals between 1.7 mm and 4.1 mm. Rethymno sees the heaviest accumulation at 4.1 mm with winds reaching 23.5 km/h. Chania is currently overcast without rain and benefits from the lightest winds on the island at 15 km/h. Temperatures across the north peak at 22 to 23°C, comfortably mild for late September.
South and East: Dry but Gusty
The south coast stays dry but faces significant wind. Ierapetra records the day's strongest gusts at 39.8 km/h, approaching Beaufort force 5. Makrigialos sees 34.2 km/h and stays dry under partly cloudy skies with the best sunshine on offer today. The east coast around Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia is breezy at 30 to 33 km/h under overcast conditions, with only a trace of rain possible in Sitia at 0.6 mm.
Mountains and Interior
Cloud cover is heavy island-wide. The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno will be shrouded in low cloud for much of the day. Hikers and drivers on mountain roads should carry waterproofs and expect reduced visibility above 800 metres.
Sea State, Wind and UV
North coast wave heights reach 1.3 to 1.5 metres, making conditions choppy for swimming and water sports. The south coast is notably calmer: Ierapetra records a wave height of just 0.28 metres and Makrigialos 0.52 metres. Sea temperatures hold at 24.5 to 25.5°C across the island, still genuinely warm for this time of year. The UV index sits at moderate levels of 4 to 6.4, suppressed by cloud cover but worth noting if skies clear in the afternoon.
Swim Verdict
If swimming is the priority today, head south. Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer calm, warm water around 25°C despite the strong onshore wind. North coast beaches face 1.3 to 1.5 metre swells, manageable for confident adult swimmers but not ideal for children or casual bathers.
Practical Tip for the Day
Rain falls mainly on the north coast through the morning and should ease by early afternoon as the system pushes eastward. If you are driving the E75 from Heraklion toward Ag. Nikolaos, roads will be wet but passable. Pack a light jacket regardless of where you are on the island: overnight lows drop to 17 to 18°C in Chania and Rethymno, marking the first proper autumn chill of the season.
