Island Overview
September 22 brings a mixed but broadly benign picture across Crete. A weak disturbance is pushing cloud and occasional light showers over the northern coast and the eastern Gulf of Mirabello, while the southern shore stays dry under thick overcast skies. Temperatures remain comfortably warm island-wide, ranging from 26.7°C in Sitia to a high of 29.6°C in Elounda, well above the late-September seasonal average.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast from Chania to Heraklion is seeing the most cloud activity today. Rethymno stands out with up to 2.7 mm of rainfall expected, making it the wettest spot on the island. Heraklion and the Mirabello area around Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos also face a chance of brief showers, though totals stay at or below 0.6 mm. The south coast, including Ierapetra and Makrigialos, escapes the rain entirely. Ierapetra records the warmest overnight low on the island at 24.1°C, a reliable marker of the south shore's sheltered microclimate as autumn approaches.
Mountain Conditions
Higher elevations across the White Mountains, Mount Ida (Psiloritis), and the Dikti range will be noticeably cooler than coastal readings, likely 8 to 12 degrees below sea level. Cloud cover at altitude may persist through the morning hours. Hikers should carry a light layer and expect reduced visibility on upper trails until early afternoon at the earliest.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures are excellent for late September: 25.2°C off Sitia up to 26.3°C at Heraklion. Wave heights are modest across the board, peaking at 0.9 m near Sitia where winds also reach their strongest at 25.9 km/h. Elsewhere, gusts stay between 13 and 19 km/h, producing light chop of 0.5 to 0.78 m. UV levels register moderate-to-high across all sites (index 6.5 to 6.75), meaning sunscreen remains necessary even through cloud cover.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming along most of the coastline. Water temperatures are warm and waves present no hazard at the majority of beaches. The exception is the far east around Sitia, where stronger winds and 0.9 m swell call for extra caution, particularly with children. South-coast beaches near Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the calmest and driest conditions of the day and are the clearest recommendation for a beach outing.
Practical Tip
If you are based on the north coast and planned a beach day, consider the drive south toward Ierapetra: roughly 90 minutes from Heraklion, you trade a chance of showers for a dry afternoon with equally warm water. Wherever you are on the island, keep a light rain jacket accessible. Showers in today's setup tend to be brief and scattered but can arrive with little warning, especially along the north coast and in the hills above Rethymno.
