Island Overview
A familiar August split is in place across Crete on 14 August 2026. The east and south are in full summer mode, with Makrigialos, Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos all touching 31°C. The north coast and far west sit several degrees cooler, held back by cloud and a meltemi that picked up overnight. Rain is not a factor: Chania recorded a trace of 0.2 mm, every other station logged zero.
North Coast vs South and East
Heraklion reaches 27.8°C under partly cloudy skies with winds gusting to 30.6 km/h, enough to keep the seafront lively. Rethymno and Hersonissos are overcast, which caps UV at 3.7 and 6.1 respectively and makes both towns more comfortable for sightseeing than sunbathing. Chania at 25.8°C has the lightest winds on the island today at 14.6 km/h and the most agreeable conditions for exploring the old harbour.
Move east or south and the character of the day changes. Ierapetra reaches 30.2°C with the strongest gusts on the island at 36.8 km/h, yet its position on the sheltered Libyan Sea keeps waves to just 0.36 m. Makrigialos and Elounda match 31.3°C under partly cloudy skies, and the Lasithi coast as a whole is delivering peak summer conditions today.
Sea State and Wind
Sea surface temperatures are warm from one end of the island to the other, ranging from 25.8°C at Sitia to 27.4°C at Ierapetra. The north coast is the rougher side: Chania waves reach 1.88 m and Heraklion 1.52 m, both driven by the northerly meltemi. The sea is manageable but noticeably active. Southern and eastern bays are in a different league: Ierapetra at 0.36 m and Makrigialos at 0.48 m are about as flat as the Aegean gets in August.
UV and Sun Exposure
UV peaks at 8.0 in Ag. Nikolaos and 7.95 in Ierapetra, both rated high. The overcast north is not much of a reprieve: Hersonissos and Malia still record 6.1. SPF 30 or higher is appropriate everywhere on the island today. Limiting direct exposure between 11:00 and 16:00 is the standard advice, and it applies even where the sky looks cloudy.
Swim Verdict
The south and east are the right choice for swimming today. Ierapetra, Makrigialos and Elounda offer flat, warm water with no meaningful swell, well suited for families and anyone who prefers calm conditions. On the north coast, waves of 1.5 to 1.9 m at Heraklion and Chania produce reasonable bodysurfing but require attention near rocky entry points. Rethymno at 1.46 m under overcast skies is still swimmable for confident adults.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are staying on the north coast and want calmer water, the E75 east toward Ag. Nikolaos or Elounda is worth the drive: under two hours from Heraklion gains you roughly 4 degrees of air temperature, near-flat seas and genuine sunshine. If you prefer to stay local, the overcast cover across Rethymno and Hersonissos is actually well suited to visiting Knossos or walking a Venetian old town without the full force of mid-August sun.
