Island Overview
A classic July day settles over Crete on 14 July 2026. No rain is expected anywhere on the island, and temperatures reach 28 to 31°C across all coastal areas. The UV index sits between 8.25 and 8.5 island-wide, firmly in the high category. The main variable today is wind, with a clear contrast between the more sheltered north coast and a robust meltemi blowing across the south and east.
North Coast and South Coast
The north coast from Chania through Heraklion to Hersonissos and Malia carries partly cloudy skies with peak temperatures of 28 to 30°C. Winds are moderate at 18 to 23 km/h, and the sea stays relatively calm with waves of 0.6 to 1.1 metres. Chania records the warmest maximum on the north coast at 30.2°C, with sea temperature reaching 26.8°C.
The south coast tells a different story. Ierapetra and Makrigialos have clear blue skies but face strong meltemi gusts near 44 km/h. Despite the wind intensity, waves remain low at 0.4 to 0.7 metres, a consequence of the sheltered southern shoreline geometry. Overnight lows at Ierapetra stay at 26.7°C, the warmest night on the island.
Eastern Crete
Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia share clear to mainly clear conditions. Winds reach 28 to 28.5 km/h across this coast. Wave heights are more noticeable in the east, touching 1.32 metres at Sitia and around 1.1 metres off Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. The day's highest temperatures, 31.1°C, are recorded at both Agios Nikolaos and Elounda.
Mountain Areas
Hikers heading into the White Mountains above Chania or the Psiloritis range above Rethymno will find temperatures 8 to 12°C cooler than the coast. Morning hours are the best window for gorge walks and high-altitude routes before the midday heat builds at lower elevations.
Sea Conditions and Swimming Verdict
Sea temperatures range from 25.2°C at Sitia and Makrigialos to 26.8°C at Chania. Every beach on the island is swimmable today. The north coast offers the calmest bathing conditions. South coast beaches at Ierapetra are fine despite the wind, with waves staying below 0.7 metres. At exposed eastern beaches near Sitia, waves reaching 1.32 metres warrant extra care for young children and weaker swimmers.
Practical Tip for 14 July
A UV index of 8 to 8.5 across the entire island makes sun protection non-negotiable. Apply SPF 50 before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. The strong winds at Ierapetra and Makrigialos can create a false sense of cool comfort while the sun still burns. Seek shade between noon and 16:00, carry water, and bring a hat.
