Island Overview
A mixed late-spring day across Crete on 22 May 2026. A low-pressure system is pulling moisture over the north coast, producing thunderstorms along the central north shore and scattered showers from Heraklion to Rethymno. The south coast stays drier but remains under cloud cover all day. Temperatures are seasonally normal, with highs ranging from 22°C in Rethymno to 24.6°C in Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda.
North Coast vs. South Coast
Hersonissos and Malia bear the day's sharpest instability, with 3.8 mm of rain and active thunderstorm conditions expected through the morning and midday hours. Heraklion sees lighter showers at 1.6 mm, while Chania remains overcast but largely dry at 0.5 mm. Rethymno catches brief showers of similar volume. Further east, Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos get only 0.3 mm and keep highs at 24.6°C, the warmest readings on the island today.
South of the mountains, Ierapetra and Makrigialos stay overcast with minimal precipitation between 0.2 and 1.1 mm. Ierapetra records the warmest overnight low on the island at 19.4°C, a consistent feature of the sheltered south coast even in unsettled conditions. Sitia on the far east sees light showers of 0.8 mm and the briskest winds of the day.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains and Psiloritis are cloud-covered throughout the day. North-facing slopes are wet and visibility is reduced at altitude. Hikers planning routes on the E4 trail above 1,000 metres should expect muddy paths and low cloud; less experienced walkers are better served by lower coastal trails today.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures sit between 19.6°C at Sitia and 20.9°C at Rethymno. North coast wave heights are modest, ranging from 0.2 m at Rethymno to 0.56 m near Malia. The south coast is noticeably choppier: Makrigialos reaches 1.02 m and Ierapetra 0.94 m. Winds are light to moderate at 10 to 16 km/h island-wide, with Sitia recording the highest gusts at 15.8 km/h. Despite thick cloud cover, UV indices range from 7.0 in Ierapetra to 8.3 in Rethymno, placing the entire island in the high category. Cloud cover at these latitudes in late May does not meaningfully screen out UV radiation.
Swim Verdict
Swimming is reasonable on the north coast at sheltered locations near Rethymno, Chania and Elounda, where waves stay below 0.5 m. Stay out of the water near Hersonissos and Malia while thunderstorms are active. On the south coast, a 1 m swell at Makrigialos and Ierapetra makes entry uncomfortable and is best avoided. Sea temperatures around 20°C are brisk but tolerable for short swims at calmer spots.
Practical Tip
If you are on the north coast, carry a compact waterproof layer and keep an eye on conditions around midday when the instability peaks. The front is expected to ease through the afternoon, particularly east of Heraklion. Apply SPF 30 or higher regardless of the grey sky: a UV index above 8 can burn unprotected skin in under 20 minutes, and cloud cover gives a false sense of safety.
